Serving writers. creating community.

Who We Are.
The mission of the Writers Association of Northern Appalachia (WANA) is to support writers from, living in, or writing about the greater northern Appalachian region by providing opportunities to share work and expertise, publish written work, and develop relationships with editors, publishers, literary scholars, readers, and fellow writers. We provide opportunities for the region’s writers to build a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming community.

How WANA serves our members.

Advocacy.
We advocate for Northern Appalachian Writers by making inroads into places we have long been excluded or forgotten.

Education.
We educate writers from throughout the region and beyond about who we are and why our voices are important.

Connections.
We connect Northern Appalachian writers to each, to writers from the rest of the region, and beyond.

Opportunities.
WANA proudly supports our flagship
literary journal, Appalachian LIT,
which features talented writers from
the region and beyond.

Possibilities.
WANA hosts a weekly virtual reading
series: WANA LIVE! Since March 2020,
we have featured hundreds of writers
from the region and beyond.

Outreach.
We travel to conferences, festivals, and
other writing events to spread the word about what we do and to find writers who are looking for community.
